This year, I’m calling hooey on myself.
“We were texting. I said, ‘Punkin, we’ll talk later.’ My later didn’t go the way I had planned. My momma was on the phone screaming. What am I supposed to do? My daddy. I’ve got to get to my daddy. Where are my brothers? Do they know? We planned every painful step of her memorial. We had to pick out her clothes, jewelry, the box we’d lay her in. I’m done. I’m done hiding.”
“When we took the childbirth prep class, I scoffed to my husband when the nurse said maternity leave is a necessity, not a luxury, because new moms spend at least 8 hours a day nursing their baby. ‘Yeah right,’ I said.”
“The orphans, the wounded, the hurting little souls that are our future. I questioned all of it, if I could do this as a single woman.”
“We hope to teach our children they don’t always need the latest and greatest to have a fulfilling life. They kept saying, ‘look at my cupcakes! Look! I made that! I did that, guys!'”
“They got along so well it felt like a fairy tale. But things quickly took a huge spiral downwards. My husband and I laid in bed going, ‘What in the world is happening right now? Why are they fighting so much?'”
“I am coming up on two years clean.”
“I will not sit in the tidy safety of quiet that propagates grieving mothers’ isolation. I will hang these babies’ chimes. I will speak their names.”
“I started this journey by creating a Pinterest board titled ‘Self-Care.’ You’re probably thinking, ‘self-care, well that’s simple. I care for myself daily; I wash my face, brush my teeth.’ BUT, do you care for yourself mentally? Do you ever put yourself first? Do you love yourself?”
